The Incredible Mulk Protein Smoothie

I love a good protein smoothie. And this Incredible Mulk protein smoothie will help fuel you through the day feeling like a superhero.

Why did I name this smoothie recipe The Incredible Mulk?

Because it’s lean, it’s green and it’s bursting with superfood power.

Also because I couldn’t think of another iconic green TV character besides the Hulk to pair with matcha and mulberries.

(Besides maybe the Grinch or Kermit the Frog. But what would you name that? The Minch? The Murmit?)

Anyway, let’s take a look at the superfood ingredients at play that make this protein smoothie such a powerhouse of nutrients.

Superfood Ingredients

I love keeping these (and quite a few more) superfood ingredients on hand in my pantry.

They’re great additions to smoothies, protein shakes, nana ice cream and smoothie bowls.

A keep a number of them stored in jars in my cabinets or panty and toss them into various meals and recipes throughout the week.

Matcha Powder

Matcha Green Tea Powder

Matcha green tea powder is a rich source of antioxidants.

It can help support protect heart and liver function, boosts brain with a dose of caffeine and can even aid in weight loss.

It’s great on its own as a hot or cold tea as well as mixed into coffee, protein shakes and smoothies.

Mulberries

Anthony’s Organic White Mulberries (2 lb)

Not only are mulberries tasty, but they also provide a boost of vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K1, iron, potassium and fiber.

They’re great in protein shakes and smoothies and as toppings for loaded toast, yogurt and smoothies bowls.

(Also great for dancing around in circles singing “here we go round the mulberry bush”.)

Chia Seeds

BetterBody Foods Organic Chia Seeds 2lb

Chia seeds are an excellent source of fiber, iron, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants.

They can be used in smoothies and smoothies bowls, as a topping on yogurts and parfaits and for making chia pudding.

A little goes a long way and they store very well in your pantry for long periods of time.

Wheat Germ

Grain Brain Wheat Germ 12 oz

Wheat germ is a whole grain source of plant protein, minerals, healthy fats, vitamin E and fiber.

Add it in smoothies and smoothie bowls, or as a topping for loaded avocado toast, eggs and other baked goods and savory dishes.

Like the chia seeds, a little goes a long way and a bag of this stuff should last you for quite some time.

When you combine all of those superfoods with a high-quality protein powder and the plant-based vitamins and minerals in fresh spinach and bananas… You’re ready for one massive boost of nutrients in this quick and easy one-cup meal. It’s also dairy-free and easily gluten-free and vegan adaptable (see ingredients substitutions below).

The Incredible Mulk Power Smoothie

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 Scoop SFH vanilla protein
  • 1 Cup fresh spinach
  • 1 Tablespoon Chia Seeds
  • 2 Tablespoons wheat germ
  • 1/2 Tablespoon Matcha powder
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 Tablespoon dried white mulberries
  • 1 Cup water
  • Ice to blend as needed (optional)

Combine all ingredients in a blender and mix until smooth and creamy. If you like a slightly thicker consistency to your smoothie (or forgot to freeze your banana), you can add some additional ice as needed to add some extra density.

(Bonus fruit freezing tip: let your bananas ripen in a brown paper bag on your kitchen counter until they are nice and brown. The riper the banana, the richer the flavor. Then peel your ripe bananas, pop them into a ziplock bag and freeze for later use. You can throw them into smoothies or later thaw them for baking banana bread and muffins.)

SUBSTITUTIONS:

  • You can swap the wheat germ for ground flaxseed for a gluten-free superfood substitute.
  • Any protein powder will work, including plant-based vegan proteins (see my list of protein powder recommendations below).
  • When making substitutions, just keep in mind that your macro count may slightly vary from this specific recipe. If you’re counting macros, just make sure to adjust the recipe macros in a macro calculator based on the ingredients you use.

SMOOTHIE MACROS:

  • Calories: 399
  • Carbs: 56g
  • Fat: 5g
  • Protein: 34g

Protein Powder Recommendations

3 Healthy Holiday Protein Smoothies for Fall. These 3 healthy fall recipes are high-protein, gluten-free and perfect for Halloween through Thanksgiving. #healthyfallrecipes #smoothierecipes #reesewoodsfitness www.reesewoods.comLet’s talk about protein powder. That is, after all, what makes a protein smoothie a protein smoothie.

I always add 2 things into my smoothies: Protein and a healthy fat.

It helps elevate a smoothie from a snack into a more substantial meal that keeps me full longer, fuels my body with energy and meets my nutritional goals for the day.

A quality protein powder will make or break the difference in your protein smoothie. I try to aim for a low-carb, high-protein powder that’s easy on the taste buds and the digestive system.

Here are three protein powder brands that I’ve tried, approved and will work with my smoothie recipes.

Tasty and Budget-Friendly Whey

Quest Nutrition Protein Powder

Click here to buy on Amazon

Quest Protein powders are gluten-free, soy-free, high-protein and low-carb. Their protein is smooth, delicious and won’t break the bank. I like their vanilla milkshake flavor, but their Cinnamon Crunch protein powder flavor is also great for fall smoothies.

High-Quality, Artificial-Free Whey

SFH Pure Whey Protein Powder

Click here to buy on Amazon

SFH is known for their high-quality protein. Gluten-free and soy-free, their Pure Whey Protein Powder is made of grass-fed whey that is that is 100% GMO and artificial ingredient-free. I’ve really enjoyed both chocolate and vanilla flavors of this protein powder.

Vegan

New Vega Protein & Greens Click here to buy on Amazon

It can be challenging to find a vegan protein powder that’s low-carb, high-protein and doesn’t taste like cardboard. I tested quite a few of them during my vegan dieting experiment and Vega was actually my favorite. It’s completely dairy, soy and GMO-free and easy on the tastebuds
