Why Give Oat Milk a Try?

How to make oat milk from scratch. Does oat milk have any benefits? Yep! Is homemade oat milk easy to make? Yep again! This dairy-free milk alternative is delicious, vegan and so easy that you'll wonder why you haven't made it for yourself sooner. #oatmilkrecipe #veganrecipe #oatmilk #reesewoodsfitness reesewoods.comMany people have been making the switch from cow milk to non-dairy milk alternatives in recent years. And we’re not just talking about vegans. More and more people (60 percent of American adults) report struggling with dairy-based food sensitivities and intolerances.

Personally, my digestive system doesn’t process dairy very well anymore. I can tolerate some dairy-based foods if I take a couple Lactaid pills in advance (those things are pretty miraculous if you’re dairy sensitive).

But nothing really helps me tolerate plain milk anymore (I unfortunately discovered a few years ago that plain milk will straight up wreck my body for about 24 hours).

But enough about me. Let’s talk about you.

Maybe you live dairy-free or are looking to reduce your overall dairy consumption. Maybe you have dairy food sensitivities. Maybe you don’t care about any of that and just enjoy delicious things in your life.

Whatever the case, maybe you should keep reading and learn how make oat milk from scratch (in American Sign Language)  for yourself.

This dairy-free milk alternative is delicious, vegan and so easy that you'll wonder why you haven't made it for yourself sooner. #oatmilkrecipe #veganrecipe #oatmilk #reesewoodsfitness reesewoods.comLast year on my Instagram page, I got a comment from a deaf viewer expressing a desire for my content to be more accessible to members the deaf community.

I’m not deaf, but growing up I gained exposure to and appreciation for American Sign Language through watching the ASL interpreters in church. I began learning from books on ASL at my local library and eventually had the opportunity to take some entry level American Sign Language classes during my time in college.

Since receiving that comment, I’ve made an effort to make my videos and content more accessible to include individuals outside of the hearing community, including the creation of my IGTV ASL cooking tutorials.

I’m not the best ASL signer and I’m still learning and improving my rusty signing skills as I go. But these videos help me to practice my signing and make more of my content accessible to the deaf community.

Best Tools for Making Oat Milk

Oat milk is crazy simple to make at home. But I’ve learned there are a couple important tools for making your best batch of oat milk from scratch: A quality blender and the right kind of salt.

A Quality Blender for Making Oat Milk

A solid blender is a non-negotiable for making quality oat (and other non-dairy) milk. Cheaper and lower-quality blenders may struggle to help fully blend and extract full flavor and nutrients from the oats. This could leave your oat milk clumpy or slimy.

The cream of the crop among blenders is hands down the Vitamix. This high-performance blender is revered by many people as the gold standard for home blenders and often surpassed the need to keep your old food processor around. It’s a little pricier than some, but it performs like no other and retains its quality and value over time.

Ninja Professional Countertop Blender

I have had this model Ninja blender for five years and it is going strong. It’s so efficient, it’s essentially taken the place of my food processor in many recipes. I also love the fact that it comes with the single-serve blender cup option and I use it literally every day for making my morning keto coffee and daily protein shakes and smoothies.

The Right Salt to Make Oat Milk

Our family made the switch to less processed salts after doing some research to learn that not all salt is made (or processed) equally. Many brands of refined salt are depleted of much of their mineral and nutritional value.

Furthermore, we learned that 90 percent of common table salts may contain microplastics (i.e. little bits of plastic). This includes sea, lake and rock salts.

We’ve made the switch to salt brands known for higher purity with less processing to retain more of their nutritional value. They’re fantastic for all kinds of cooking and have excellent flavor,

Recipe for Homemade Oat Milk

How to make oat milk from scratch. Does oat milk have any benefits? Yep! Is homemade oat milk easy to make? Yep again! This dairy-free milk alternative is delicious, vegan and so easy that you'll wonder why you haven't made it for yourself sooner. #oatmilkrecipe #veganrecipe #oatmilk #reesewoodsfitness reesewoods.com

INGREDIENTS:

•1 Cup of rolled oats
•4 Cups of filtered water
•1 Pinch of Celtic sea salt

DIRECTIONS:

Combine all ingredients in a high-quality blender. Blend for 30-60 seconds until ingredients are well blended.

Strain the oat milk once through a clean kitchen dish towel (or clean t-shirt), then using another clean dish towel (or clean t-shirt) strain the milk a second time.

Store milk in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to five days.

Makes about 2 cups.

PREP TIPS FOR SUCCESS:

  • Don’t blend the ingredients longer than 60 seconds (blending longer can give the milk a slimy consistency).
  • A traditional strainer, cheese cloth or nut milk bag will allow too much pulp to strain though, which can give the milk a starchy/slimy consistency. So use that dish towel or t-shirt!
  • Straining the milk twice offers the best results separating the milk from the oat pulp and excess starch.

Final Thoughts on Making Oat Milk from Scratch

Not only is oat milk easy and affordable to make at home, it’s also a healthy alternative to dairy-based milk that’s simple to incorporate into your nutritional routine. There are definitely a few tricks to making the best batch of oat milk, but you’re now ready to start making and enjoying your very own homemade oat milk!

Oat milk is one of my favorite. Creamy and with lovely flavor. You made great post and your instructions are really easy to follow. Now people will have no excuse to continue to buy oat milk in stores.

Loved watching your video on how to make oat milk in ASL. I’m curious if you’ve found any uses for the pulp that’s been strained?

You can actually use it to make oat flour if you want! Just spread it out evenly on a baking pan and toast it in the oven until crisp. Then then you can puree it into a fine powder in a food processor. You can also compost the oat pulp.
